REGISTRATION NOW OPEN for the Historic Trails Workshop May 14-18, 2012 Socorro, NM
Posted on December 21, 2011 at 9:01 pm

“From Line on a Map to Real on the Ground”

Starting with two field exercises during the first two days, this workshop will allow participants to holistically examine and understand issues concerning the documentation, preservation, and development of national historic trails for public use on two historic routes through the historic city of Socorro and the little-changed Bosquecito Road. The exercises will engage participants in a fun, challenging, intensive, and structured effort, with lessons and experiences applicable to all NHTs.  One session will also give nonprofit trail groups a chance to brainstorm how to strengthen their organizations.

Day three will broaden our discussion to current policy initiatives, such as AGO and its emphasis on “Large Landscapes.”  It will be held at the nearby Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.  We will examine trail corridor preservation strategies being developed by the Bureau of Land Management, the nexus between national trails and national wildlife refuges and a number of opportunities for historic trail preservation in AGO.   We will also use several case studies to explore ways historic trails are being protected from (and damaged by) energy production projects.  We will end the day with a tour of the Refuge before returning to Socorro.

Cost: $340 ($165 Monday through Thursday Program, $175 Required Meal Package).

Thank you to everyone who participated in Trails Advocacy Week- Hike the Hill 2012! We had a a great turnout to this event, with over 80 trails leaders, volunteers, and agency staff joining us for PNTS Leadership Meetings for the first segment of Trails Advocacy Week and then for congressional and agency visits on Capitol Hill.  It was a busy week, made particularly interesting by the release of the President’s budget just as we were getting started.  PNTS program participants also partook in the 3rd Annual Hike on the National Mall and the Congressional Trails Caucus reception, both led by the American Hiking Society.

Sounds like an unexpected incident occurred at Trail Days in Damascus yesterday. Thankfully, it sounds like most injuries were minor. Glad to see that the hiking community came together to deal with the situation.

Get Out More

We just had a chance to speak with First Responders here in Damascus, VA and are happy to report that all but one hiker injured in yesterday's accident during the Annual Trail Days Hiker Parade have been released from the hospital. It was a scary scene here when an elderly gentleman, a former AT thru-hiker, lost control of his vehicle and plowed into dozens of hikers marching in the parade. We were about 200ft away from where the accident occurred and got to witness first hand hikers jump into action during a time of what has been described by many as "one of the scariest things they've ever seen". Dozens of heroes emerged from the crowd yesterday, a former AT Thru-Hiker lunged into the vehicle to remove the keys from the ignition while a group of about thirty hikers marching in the parade lifted the vehicle into the air to free a fellow hiker trapped underneath. Medical helicopters were used to transport the most seriously injured to nearby hospitals. Such an intense scene certainly changed the mood of the festival, but this tight knit community banded together to console those impacted and hundreds gathered to observe a period of silence before Backpacker's Annual Trail Days Giveaway. A tragic and unfortunate event here at Trail Days, however the response and ability of hikers to come together reassures our faith in and enhances our respect for the AT Community.
